Early Life

According to traditional accounts, Mannurutti Swamigal was born as Ramakrishnan in Thirukovilur in a Vaishnava family. His parents are traditionally identified as Munusamipillai and Aranganayaki. He was educated and is said to have pursued college studies before experiencing a profound inner transformation that turned his attention away from ordinary worldly life and towards spiritual practice. rajiyinkanavugal.blogspot.com

Following this transformation, he travelled to Tiruvannamalai, where he engaged in meditation and spiritual discipline. Although he returned home for a period at his mother’s request, his inclination towards solitude and spiritual contemplation continued. After his mother’s passing and the completion of the customary rites, he travelled towards Cuddalore and subsequently came to Puducherry. rajiyinkanavugal.blogspot.com

His Life in Puducherry

In Puducherry, Ramakrishnan spent considerable time in meditation and solitude, including near the Jeeva Samadhi of Siddhananda Swamigal. He gradually became known for his detached way of living and his spiritual influence among those who approached him. Traditional accounts describe him as a Siddhar who offered guidance and relief to people who came to him with their difficulties. YouTube

How Did He Become Known as “Mannurutti Siddhar”?

The name Mannurutti is closely connected with his distinctive spiritual practice.

When he sat alone in deep thought or meditation, he was said to take a small amount of earth or soil in his hand and roll it repeatedly with his thumb. Devotees and local people began calling him “Mannurutti Swami”, meaning the Swami who rolls the earth, and the name eventually became inseparable from his identity. rajiyinkanavugal.blogspot.com

His association with soil is also reflected in traditional accounts of his spiritual experiences. Stories told by devotees describe extraordinary incidents in which he remained absorbed in meditation despite difficult natural circumstances. One such account places him near the Thalaikkattu stream at Pommiyarpalayam, where floodwater reportedly covered him with sand up to his neck. After the water receded, a passer-by discovered him and removed the sand; the Siddhar is said to have simply walked away without showing distress. rajiyinkanavugal.blogspot.com

Service to Devotees

Mannurutti Swamigal is remembered not merely for unusual spiritual experiences, but also for his compassionate relationship with ordinary people. Traditional accounts state that people approached him seeking relief from personal difficulties, illness and other problems, and that he responded according to his spiritual insight.

His simple lifestyle, indifference to worldly possessions and deep absorption in meditation contributed to the belief among devotees that he had attained a high spiritual state. YouTube

His Final Days

According to the traditional biography associated with Siddhargal Thiruvadi, Mannurutti Swamigal spent his later days in Puducherry, including at the residence of Jeevarathinam Udaiyar in Kuyavarpalayam. When he became seriously ill, he is said to have indicated that his physical body was nearing its final stage and asked to be taken there.

He then imparted the spiritual knowledge and insights he had received to his disciples and devotees. Traditional accounts state that he attained Jeeva Mukti on 16 January 1963, the day of Mattu Pongal, merging with the Supreme Reality. The Siddhargal Thiruvadi video also records January 1963 as the period of his final union with the Supreme. YouTube

Historical note: Some later sources give 16 January 1965 instead of 1963. Because the original Siddhargal Thiruvadi – Epi. 0226 record gives January 1963, this page can retain 1963 while noting that the date differs in some secondary sources. maghavilvam.blogspot.com

Jeeva Samadhi

Following his Jeeva Mukti, there was reportedly a discussion regarding the appropriate location for his Jeeva Samadhi. Traditional accounts state that, when different locations were suggested, a decision was sought through a traditional method of drawing lots. The result indicated Govindasami Mudaliar’s garden, where his Jeeva Samadhi was subsequently established. rajiyinkanavugal.blogspot.com

Today, the Mannurutti Siddhar Jeeva Samadhi Temple is associated with Thennansalai Road, Pudupalaiyam, Puducherry – 605001. The original Siddhargal Thiruvadi episode identifies the shrine at Thennan Salai Road, Pudupalaiyam, and records the annual Guru Pooja during Thai month on the Pushya (Poosam) Nakshatra day. YouTube

Spiritual Significance

Mannurutti Siddhar’s life represents the spiritual path of detachment, meditation, compassion and inner discipline. His apparently simple act of rolling a little earth in his hand became the symbol by which generations of devotees came to remember him.

His Jeeva Samadhi continues to be a place of worship for devotees visiting Puducherry in search of the blessings of the Siddhar tradition.
