History of Vellaadai Siddhar

There is a village called Appuppillaiyur in Kerala, approximately 28 km from Pollachi.

The great saint known as Vellaadai Siddhar was a disciple of Agathiyar Maharishi. He lived there for many years without seeking fame or publicity.

In his previous birth, Vellaadai Siddhar is said to have lived in Thanjavur as the spiritual Guru of a king. In his present birth, he was blessed with the divine darshan of Agathiyar Maharishi, regarded as the leader of the Siddhars.

Approximately 95 years ago, Vellaadai Siddhar met several spiritual masters and asked them questions regarding his deep spiritual doubts and experiences.

Many of them did not provide answers. However, Vadakarai Sivananda Paramahamsa Swamigal, in response to his spiritual questions, initiated him into Vaasi Yoga.

After this initiation, Vellaadai Siddhar attained a particular stage in his spiritual practice. He then travelled to Palani, where he stayed for one paksha—approximately 14 days—without taking food.

During this period, he was blessed with the darshan of Bhogar Siddhar and received direct initiation from him.

Following this initiation, Vellaadai Siddhar attained the next stage of his spiritual journey.

After practising intense tapas for many years at that level, he is said to have walked around the entire world three times.

After reaching another significant stage in his spiritual journey, he travelled to the Pothigai Hills, which are traditionally believed to be the abode of Agathiyar Maharishi.

There, he came across a place known as Kalyani Waterfalls. Through the power of his tapas and his intense desire to have the darshan of his Guru Agathiyar, he was able to discover a hidden path.

This was not a path that an ordinary person could easily discover.

For approximately two kilometres, he travelled by crawling through a dark cave.

After that, he continued his journey for approximately one kilometre by crawling along the ground.

At the end of this difficult journey, he encountered a large body of water.

Crocodiles, snakes and other creatures were present in the water.

On the opposite side of this water body, he saw Agathiyar Maharishi performing tapas along with his disciples.

If he could cross the water, he would be able to reach his Guru and receive his blessings.

At that moment, he remembered Bhogar Siddhar, who was a disciple of Agathiyar and his second Guru, and prayed to him.

The very next moment, Vellaadai Siddhar found himself on the opposite side of the water.

How he reached the other side remains a mysterious secret—even to him.

There, one of Agathiyar Maharishi’s disciples asked Vellaadai Siddhar one thousand questions, and he answered them.

Afterwards, the disciple taught him a mantra that would invoke Agathiyar Maharishi’s attention and cause him to open his eyes and look upon him.

As soon as Vellaadai Siddhar chanted that mantra, he received the gracious divine gaze of Agathiyar Maharishi.

Agathiyar Maharishi appeared with a golden-coloured body and a very long beard. He looked at Vellaadai Siddhar and asked:

“How did you come here?”

Vellaadai Siddhar humbly replied:

“I was able to come here only through your divine grace and blessings.”

He then requested:

“I have come here so that I may remain with you. Please grant me your grace and allow me to stay with you.”

Agathiyar Maharishi replied:

“You have certain duties that you must fulfil. You must return to your ancestral place. I myself shall come there.”

With these words, Agathiyar Maharishi blessed Vellaadai Siddhar and sent him back.

This extraordinary event is said to have taken place in the early part of the 1930s, around 1935.

The place to which Vellaadai Siddhar returned was Appuppillaiyur.

After returning, Vellaadai Siddhar fulfilled his family responsibilities. He then attained Jeeva Samadhi at the age of 108, remaining in Appuppillaiyur.

At present, the Jeeva Samadhi is being maintained and administered by a family.

The photograph has been published with the permission of that family.

The people associated with the Samadhi had lived in close association with Vellaadai Siddhar for many years and had received his blessings.

It is believed that prayers offered at the Jeeva Samadhi of Vellaadai Siddhar are fulfilled in their entirety.

அந்தப் பாதையை சாதாரண மனிதர்களாகிய நம்மால் கண்டறிய முடியாது. சுமாராக இரண்டு கி.மீ.தூரத்துக்கு ஒரு இருண்ட குகை வழியாக ஊர்ந்தே பயணித்திருக்கிறார்;
